A Pioneer Miller in South Australia: The life of Johann Daniel Schlinke
On 13 February 2024, I presented the life story of my 2xgreat uncle, Johann Daniel Schlinke, to the Germanic and Continental Europe Special Interest Group of the South Australian Genealogical & Heraldry Society Inc.
This paper was revised and presented to the German Interest Group of the San Diego Genealogical Society on 20 March 2024.
Daniel Schlinke came to South Australia on the Catharina in 1839 and was a prominent figure in early South Australian German activities. He established mills at Bethany and Tanunda, and he was an active member of the Barossa German community. It is a sizzling tale of some intrigue and details the movement of two of his sons and his second wife to California.
